The Luxembourg Hideaway
No Comments Luxembourg is a small Duchy tucked away between France, Germany and Belgium. When I say small, I mean the smallest country (except the Vatican) in Europe. It is in this country which I have spent almost a week, using it as a base of operations and an opportunity to be with family.
Luxembourg-ville is so small that I was able to walk in and about the city center twice in a couple of hours. I did not think that there was much to the place, but, as we all know, perceptions can be deceiving. I was able to round off the areas that I missed, which were surprisingly beautiful and rustic, with auntie and uncle on a nice lazy sunday:

This small town– far off a backpackers map– is definately a place one must visit, if only for a day, to see life uncluttered by tourists. Stores close early and almost everything is closed on Sundays… one will find this to be of stark contrast to the 24hour a day super markets in the States– late night pizza delivery, nope; markets open late, nope. The only places which are open till a late hour are pubs and restaurants. Even then, the atmosphere will be very slow and relaxed. This isn’t a bad thing, life is just a bit different here. Being able to understand such discoveries is, in my opinion, the reason why we must travel. I say to all the tourists, forego your itinerary of big cities, luxery hotels and overhyped tourist attractions– Luxembourg will be nice.
I sit at uncle’s desk in the living room with a nice view towards a decently sized plot of land. Subplots, for purpose of gardening, are leased by different families, who may have waited years in queue as though the land were Laker’s season tickets. Families would spend weekends out here tending to their small sections, having nice bbq dinners under a hot lazy evening sun– dusk doesn’t arrive until close to 10pm.

Discovering such small charms gives me a perspective about the life that we all live. I like to ponder what kind of life I’d like to live– fast paced city life, slow country, suburbia? But I then remember that the life I am living is here and now, discovering the world and thinking pleasant thoughts about everyone back home. I thank auntie and uncle for hosting me in Luxembourg, for yet another opportunity to reflect about life.
