I can understand how out of all privacy policies, ours may seem a little backward. The first part you mention is a bit of a Canadian Law thing. The government up here went on a privacy crusade a couple of years back, so some of the language reflects stringent rules our lawyers made us adhere to.

As far as stating that we both disclose and keep data private; when you create an account in our system we give you the option of setting each item as public or private. If Private is chosen, then it will not be disclosed to anyone and only used within the site for weighting reviews in searches. If they are set to public, then those point's are disclosed giving you more traffic and revenue. Trying to squeeze all that into one document resuts in something that even confuses me at times. What I know is that if you don't want it shared, it won't be, but if you do? more revenue for you. Ultimately your choice.

As an online marketer I absolutely love this privacy policy dissection. When advertising through email I always stay away from lists where the user isn't getting a regular newsletter from the sender. If the sender isn't sending them mail regularly then recipient will think it's spam regardless of the privacy policy. Privacy policies aren't just for consumers. They're for businesses too. Here's something on what businesses should keep private entrepreneur infochachkie.
