Madrid, it’s a small world.

I took an overnight train from Port Bou– needed a local train to get into Spain first– to Madrid. The experience was the closest I’ve come to staying in a hostel so far this trip. You get a super tiny bunk, shared in a room of five other bunks with only the bare necessities: tiny blanket, flat pillow and rough bedsheets. I was surprised to feel rested in the morning after waking a few times in the night, tossing and turning, with a back ache.

Once I got here, I was again lost in the station for about an hour just getting bearings and planning on what to do. I had contacted my host and ended up determining that I would check my backpack into a locker at a more central train station. Which leads me to the next interesting part.

I ran into an older Spanish gentleman, who happens to live in Hong Kong with his wife. He sported a greying fumanchu and we ended up speaking at some length. It’s a nice small world, and I’m just thankful that I didn’t embarass myself with my generally horrible Cantonese. :) The cool thing about travelling is that one never knows what one may see or who one may meet. Just a highlight.

The day continues to be rather busy. I spent a few hours at the Reine Sophia modernest museum. I say that Abstract Expressionism is way beyond me. Which got me to think: Abstract Expressionism is just a progression from Expressionism, which is a progression from Impressionism; one really appreciates all art seen within some larger context, as is with the progression of my travels, as is with the progression of life in general.

So I’m about to wrap up here, take a quick shower, walk about the town and then meet back with my host for a Tapas dinner.

By the way, I had Churros con Chocolate (dipped) for a breakfast… Cholesterol raising goodness (post and picture to come later).
