Montpellier

I haven’t off-loaded my pictures from my camera, so please be patient.

I’m actually in St. Jean de Verdas, which is a very small village outside of Montpellier. I toured around the area the bit to see the old towns. Montpellier is small enough that I covered everything in less than half a day, while spending the rest of that day at a parkside cafe relaxing under the shade of trees.

My hosts are really cool. We all went, including a Tawainese Couch Surfer who happens to be cycling about 100km a day from Amsterdam to Lisbon, to a local bbq of friends. The gathering was north of Montpellier in the countryside, which povided a huge contrast to what I’ve seen around the immediate area; the next day was spent out at the beach areas touring some sights, relaxing in the cool Mediteranian waters and bathing on the soft (and clean) sand until sunset, (which happens to be around 9:30pm).

I never expected, when planning, to be in Montpellier. There really isn’t anything of “International Sight Seeing Value” here, but it has been totally worth the visit to meet the Couch Surfers in the area. I think meeting new friends in this– more personal– environment is the reason why I am having so much fun.

Today, I head off to Madrid. I will be leaving in the early afternoon for the Spanish border, followed by the actual overnight train to Madrid. I’ll spend a few days there then take another overnight train to Lisbon. This is a bit of a detour from my original trip plans, but I think I still have plenty of time to hit what I want.
